Out of all of these I think only real estate should be allowed in these retirement accounts.

Commodities in a 401k sounds like absolute insanity to me.

I want to second what Christopher said about limiting the expansion of investment types in retirement accounts to real estate. This is already possible in a self-directed IRA.

Graham, your survey is targeting relatively savvy investors, the average woman or man on the street would only get themselves in trouble with more arcane investments in their 401(k) or IRAs. There’s good reasons for the concept of Qualified Investors.
